Dytronics Ltd. was contracted to work with TrafficMaster and assist development of the hardware for the new YQ model. This role involved working at the customers’ premises, and liaising with external graphics designers, suppliers and PCB assembly plants.

The design of the ‘always-on’ traffic monitoring system raised some interesting technical conflicts and design challenges. The display was custom-made to reduce interference and increase battery life. EMC was designed into the product from the start, and the performance checked at various development stages. The YQ is designed to work in the automotive market and particular attention was given to power supply efficiency and protection.

The YQ went into production, and has been sold by direct marketing and through automotive retail outlets. The traffic data is sold in the form of data keys which allow data to be received for 6/12 months. The specification and security of the data keys was a key part of this design brief.
